Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
SPACE is a new, evidence-based model that is extremely valuable for helping parents help their kid/teen win their battle with anxiety. Many parents and caregivers of children and teenagers want to help them, but do not know how. One family member’s anxiety affects the entire family, and it is easy to feel lost in the anxiety storm. SPACE helps families see through the fog and find a way forward.
SPACE is a unique approach to treating childhood anxiety because it is entirely parent-focused. This can be ideal for families where a child/teen is reluctant or unwilling to attend therapy or involve their parents. SPACE focuses on parent coaching to help families respond to their child’s anxiety (and, often, their own!) with clarity, confidence, and love. We work on reducing unhelpful accommodations and building confidence in both the child and parent. I love seeing parents light up when they tell me about their child’s success, even though I may have never met the child!
SPACE is highly effective as a stand-alone treatment, but also complements family or individual therapy very well. I tailor my approach to each family and their specific needs.
